Long weekend

We are at the end of a long weekend, after celebrating Canada day.

Things are a bit unusual in Ontario when Canada Day falls on a Sunday.  Normally, stores have to be closed on a holiday.  However, because the holiday falls on Sunday, they are required to be closed on Sunday.

That is actually a nice bonus for everyone, as we can stay up late enjoying fireworks and other activities, and not have to drag ourselves to work the next day.

We took advantage of this by driving to Kincardine, on the shore of Lake Huron, to go to the beach and watch fireworks with friends.

It was a good day.

It was a long drive, but some of the kids slept on the way.  That helped eliminate the usual “Are we there yet?” questions.

Once we got there, and got settled on the beach, we played in the water.  We dug holes in the sand.  Lots of running around.

After we had supper, we went for a walk along the board walk.  We found a really nice park, and spent quite a bit of time there.

We settled back in at our spot to watch the sunset and wait for the fireworks.  It probably took about 45 minutes after the sunset for the fireworks to begin.

As we were waiting, we could see several other fireworks displays along the shore.

Once the show started, it was quite well done.

It took quite a while to get out of the parking lot.  It makes for a challenge when several hundred cars try to get onto the exit road, with only one exit.

The drive home was quite quiet.  Once we got there, the kids had a quick bath to rinse off the sand, and they went to bed very easily.  And slept in for quite a while this morning as well.  No complaints, as we were tired as well.

At the end of it all, it was a fun day.
