Busy weekend

January 25, 2015

This has been a weekend of milestones for us.

Reid was five yesterday. Today marks the fifth anniversary of him coming home.

We were fortunate to get him so young. He really has no recollection of anything other than life with us. We are tremendously blessed to have that experience.

Even though things are busy, we are blessed to have Reid in our family. He is patient and determined, which helps make sure we get what he is trying to communicate.

We have much to be thankful for, there is no doubt about that.

Happy eighth birthday, Tate!!

February 20, 2014

It is hard to believe that pur journey to parenthood started eight years ago when Tate was born.

He was quite excited.

At this point in time in 2006, we were in Burkina Faso on a missions trip. We did not bwcome aware that he would be available for adoptioom for another few weeks.

This marked the beginning of our adoptom journey.

Happy Fourth Birthday, Reid

January 23, 2014

It is hard to believe that Reis will be four tomorrow.

Most of the time, he is a delight. Other times, not so much.

So much has happened in his short life.

We have walked the road of fostering to adopt. We have walked along the road of open adoption.

As time has passed , we have become aware of some developmental delays.

He has really progressed over the past few months. His speech can be a not hard to get, but he tries really hard. He is a determine d little stinker. It serves him well most of the time. It will help him work to overcome his challenges.

I would think the highlight of this year was getting him involved with the Ice Pirates hockey program. In two months, Reid moved from being hesitant to go out on the ice to one who gets a skating aid and goes out in his own, and being a forces on the ice. Hopefully he is skating on his own by the end of March.

It will be an exciting year, as we figure out school and how to help integrate him into the school system.

Seven years ago

February 20, 2013

We celebrated Tate’s seventh birthday.

When he was born, we were in the midst of a 9 week trip to Africa.

At that point in time, we had been waiting for about four years to become parents.  Our story is told in a number of parts, here, part 1, part 2, and part 3.

Where has the time gone?

January 25, 2013

We had a low key thing with just us for Reid’s birthday.

He got a couple of books with trucks and other big stuff, like tractors and trains.  And a really simple remote control Lightning McQueen.

And, today is the third anniversary of him coming home.

Even though it took over year for the adoption to become final, it is neat that we had from the day after he was born.

Upcoming birthday

January 23, 2013

Tonight, we put our two year old to be for the last time.

Tomorrow, he will be three.

It’s hard to believe Reid is going to be three tomorrow.  The time has flown by.

So many things have happened.

A journey through foster to adopt.

The beginning of a journey of parenting a child with special needs.  We will have to advocate for him to get the resources he needs to help keep up.

On the other end of things, Tate needs to be challenged to do better than meet the basic expectations.  He rips through assignments at school so he can go and play.  The annoying thing is, he can do so much more than the minimum.

The journey continues.

Summer’s winding down

September 2, 2012

We were planning on going to the waterpark today and meeting the boys’ cousins there.

We found out they went away with their grandparents for the night.

The boys and I ended up going with my brother-in-law to a restaurant in a nearby small town to celebrate his birthday.  The birthday person gets a free meal.

My nephew (his oldest son) went there a couple of months ago for our birthday.  We celebrate on the same day.

This pub has various forms of entertainment through the week.  We happened to have the experience of hearing karaoke this afternoon.  WOW.  I wish they had a gong, like the classic show from many years ago, The Gong Show.  It would have been well used.

Later on, Tate and I went to the indoor playground beside the water park.  He played on the play structure.  We played indoor mini golf.  We did the indoor climbing wall.

At the end of it all, we had lots of fun.

Second birthday

January 24, 2012

Wow, time flies.

Today is Reid’s second birthday. It’s hard to believe, so much has happened.

He was born on January 24, and came home on January 25.

Back then, I wasn’t putting too much on the blog. Here’s the link to the post:

We were expecting him to be born on Tuesday, and come home on Wednesday. I was going to work for a couple of days, and then take the rest of the week off.

It turns out that he was born early on Sunday morning, and was ready to come home on Monday.

Since Family & Children’s Services works regular office hours, with child protection functioning around that, no one knew that until 8:30 Monday morning.

By that point in time, I had gone to work and was getting into my day. Then, the phone rings. Come home. NOW. Because he is coming. I had to kill about 15 minutes, as I had to wait for the next scheduled bus. I told a few people, and headed home. We scrambled to get ready for the baby, who would be coming around 11:00. We scrambled, and rushed. He ended up coming around noon.

And, life as we knew it was turned upside down. And still is.

One year doctor visit

January 27, 2011

Braydon had his one year doctor visit and immunizations today.

He is between 24 and 26 lbs. Weighing him is like trying to nail a bowl of unset jello to the wall. The doctor said “I guess we’re not going to get an accurate measurement.”. Ya think?

He seems to be a bit slimmer since he has started moving around.

Nothing is safe unless it is about 36″ off the ground.

One year old!!!

January 24, 2011

Wow, he is a year old. Unbelievable.

And of course, another kick at the can for visits.

One of the workers called today, and visits will start again on February 2, and every second week after that. After about six weeks with no visits, he will see BM for two hours. In the last one hour visit, he cried for about 15 minutes before he settled down. He was upset when I picked him up, and he quickly settled down once he was in my arms.

Now, the worker will pick him up and drop him off – 10:00 to 12:00. At least it won’t be during his main nap time. Around lunch time may not be a winner. He has changed so much in the last month. Hopefully things will move forward quickly, but honestly, who knows.

His worker asked us to summarize how the visits went, and how he has been with other people as well. He is starting to make strange more than he did before.
