Swimming again

May 16, 2012

We had another round of swimming lessons tonight.

It was another fairly basic lesson.  Front floats, back floats, nothing exciting.  Then, jumping into the pool. Reid was jumping from at least a foot back.  Once, I was standing about 3 feet from the edge, and he jumped to my side.  I almost missed him, and had to fish him out of the water.

It’s amazing how Reid is becoming aware of his surroundings.  His communication is improving.  There are many things he points at, and makes similar sounds.

If we listen carefully, there are many sounds that are close, but slightly different.  It just takes a bit of time to listen and see what he is pointing at.

Swimming and other things

May 9, 2012

We had week #7 of swimming.

My expectations of swimming lessons was redefined tonight, in a whole new way.  Not a good one.

Something that was really different tonight was how much Reid was waving at Sandra.  From a long way across the pool, further than normal.

Tonight, we were folding some laundry.  Reid loves to get in and throw things around.  He was told no a few times, and then he started to cry, almost inconsolably.  It actually is a sign that no is starting to mean something.  It’s tough to hear, but a good sign that he is continuing to progress.

Swimming Lessons – week 3 and 4

April 18, 2012

Reid had to miss out on swimming lessons last week.

We were out for supper, and we noticed stuff running from his ear.  By the time we were done, we had decided that Sandra would take Tate to swimming lessons, and I would take Reid to the doctor.

It ended up that Reid had a burst ear drum, from a strep infection.  His throat was really red as well.  He got a prescription as well.  Fun times.  The doctor said to check with our family doctor next week, and he would likely be able to go back in the pool.

Fast forward a week.

Sandra called our family doctor, and he didn’t recommend going in the pool.  He said to bring Reid in next week, and see how things look.

We ended up taking him for lessons tonight.  I didn’t put his head under the water.  It was a bit different, as dunking is part of the drill.

So, that is how it is week 3 and 4.  Week 3 that Reid went, week 4 of the session.

Great Wolf

April 9, 2012

Yesterday, we went to Great Wolf Lodge for a night.

Great Wolf Lodge has an indoor water park, with a couple of pools and several waterslides for kids and adults.

We went last summer for a night, with just our family.

This time, we went with Sandra’s sister, brother, and their families.  It was a good time, but it was good to come home.

We had lots of fun.  There is lots of standing in line as part of the experience.

Tate was asleep a few minutes into the trip.  Reid finally fell asleep about half an hour before we got home.  Tate went to bed fairly easily.  Reid was a mess.  It took him about fifteen minutes to settle down.

At the end of it all, both are in bed, resting.

We spent the day at Great Wolf Lodge. Reid was tired. Life is sure easier when kids can walk.

Swimming lessons – week 2

April 4, 2012

As I was coming home tonight, I was thinking that it would nice to have a quiet night at home.

As I walked in the house, I saw everyone eating supper.  Oh crap, I forgot about swimming.

Fast forward an hour, as we are waiting by the pool for our instructor, I realize it is the same one as last week.

I hoped that the experience would be a bit more interactive than it was last week.  Sadly, not so much.  I could almost smell that he probably had not taught that age group, and didn’t seem to have much confidence with that age.  It is tough to interact with 1 and 2 year olds if you are not that comfortable with them.

After one song, and a bit of random commentary, I suggested that the slide was usually a hit.  He said that the pool is really busy.

Fair enough, it was.  But there is lots of area for the kids in that area, and we were going to be leaving one area completely open.   He took my suggestion, which added some activity.

We went to warm section of the pool, and one other parent commented that there usually is more activity than we had.  We had one little song, and some pretty minimal coaching, aside from the slide.

On the way out, I asked at the reception desk about the instructor.  The lady I spoke to thought he was new, but wasn’t sure.  She offered to have the head guard give me a call.  She called, and was willing to speak to him and give him some pointers and a bit more of a lesson plan, and maybe even come into the class next week to help boost his confidence.

All in all, it was a fun, and busy night.

Swimming lessons

March 28, 2012

The boys started swimming lessons again tonight.

It’s been quite a while since we had them in swimming.

Tate is progressing well in his class.

Reid and I are together in his class.  We have taken a few classes.  Parent and tot classes usually involve a bit of singing, some cutesy games, and few other busy things.  It is a combination of parental interaction and getting little ones used to water.  This class was ….. different.

The teacher was somewhat underwhelming.  One song, a few dunks, and not much else.  Hopefully he was a fill in.

Today was the second class if waterbabies. Braydon loved it again.

Lots of fun to come in the weeks ahead.
